Ski Trips

The Sunday Outings --- Ski /Hike / Snowshoe
A perfect way to get out and enjoy our wonderful local parks, with friends and family, non-members are welcome! We will meet on Sundays in Jan and Feb at 10:30 for breakfast and at 12 noon, at the parks. Depending on the weather, we can ski, snowshoe or hike. And everyone may decide to go out afterwards, too. No cost, except park entrance fees. Some of the parks do rent skis, please call ahead and reserve, if needed. We have a great group of people who have volunteered to lead each week. Many thanks to all of them! Hope to see you on the trails! Check the monthly calendar for locations .

Ski Instruction
Learn to Turn at Mt. Brighton
For decades the Ann Arbor Ski Club has provided instruction Mt. Brighton. Although most of the alpine activities are out west or up north, a ski area 25 minutes from town is a resource that we are lucky to have. We are joining the Thunderbird Ski Club on Sunday mornings for lessons at Mt. Brighton. The lessons are inexpensive and we get a substantial discount in lift tickets through the T-birds. However, bring your money in cash; No checks or credit cards.

Angles!
What can be done at Mt. Brighton? If you don't ski or board, this is the cheapest place to learn. A bunny hill is a bunny hill, whether at Mt. Brighton or at Vail. In the club program, you'll be able to take lessons at all levels for 8-10 weeks (depending on the weather) - and it is very economical.

If you kind of know how to ski or board, but are still a beginner, you might as well learn the basics here where it is so convenient. Then, if you make it up north or out west, you'll be able to get off the green (beginner) slopes and hit the blue and black (not black and blue) slopes where the best scenery is.

What if you are an intermediate or advanced skier? Consider running gates. Unlike many types of racing, ski racing is not won by those in the best physical condition, nor is it won by those willing to take the biggest risk by "pointing them downhill." Instead, it is won by those who can make the best turns. You have to go around the gates (poles), and if you don't turn very well, you don't go very fast. Note the pictures above. They are of skiers before and after lessons with gates. Note that the picture on the left shows the skier leaning into the hill with too much weight on the inside ski. The second picture shows a much more dynamic stance with most of the weight on the outside (left) ski (but both skis are working). Note that in the second picture the upper body more vertical (almost in line with the gate or pole). This leaves him ready to initiate the next turn without skidding.

If you spend any time running gates, you will find that your ability to turn when and where you want will improve tremendously. It will help your skiing in the trees and in the bumps, and you will be able to leave those railroad track ski marks in the snow. Even if you don't like to ski fast, you'll find that you have better control after you've spent a few nights trying to make it around the gates. This is where the convenience of Brighton pays off: gates at Brighton are the same as gates at Vail. A turn is a turn. Brighton will give you several opportunities to improve this year.

Here are the details for the Mt. Brighton program.

  • When: Sunday mornings.
  • Dates: see calendar
  • Times: Signup: 10:00AM -- 11:00 12:30PM -- 1:00
               Lessons: 11:00AM -- 12:00 1:00PM -- 2:00
  • Cost: Lessons: $10(payable in cash only)
Sign-up: The AASC will be joining the Ford Thunderbirds' program for ski and nowboard lessons this year. The Thunderbirds have an established lesson program with PSIA-certified instructors for ski lessons. The lessons are pay as you go.

Rentals: Not included. Contact Mt. Brighton and allow time before the class to get equipment.
Go to the ski lesson desk inside on the left of the center walk through to purchase. Since we are not contracting through Mt. Brighton for lessons, we will not receive a discount at the ticket window.

Softball

It's that time again - AASC summer softball is right aroung the corner! League games begin May 7th - July 16th(no games July 2nd); sign ups will start in April (probably the first meeting in April). There are 6 co-rec teams. The season includes three parties (it wouldn't be an AASC event without parties!). There will be clinics offered for the captains/assistant captains. The price for the season is $55.00/member, $65.00/non-member.
Questions? Contact John DeWitt, dewittje@michigan.gov, 734-546-1546

Location of Games: Mitchell Field on Fuller Road, just below and North of the University of Michigan Medical Center.

What to Bring: Bring your selves, maybe a frisbee for after the game, rollerblades for blading down the path to Gallop Park, some refreshments for after the game - no alcohol at the games. However, after the games, we party near or in the parking lot. There is no alcohol allowed in the Mitchell Field area - it is University - but???

Why Come to Mitchell Field? Because Mitchell Field is the place to be on Thursday evenings. This is where you can contact many AASC members and wannabees. Many folks join the AASC just to participate in the softball league. We play games exclusively with other AASC teams. Be there.

More information on softball in Ann Arbor can be found on the Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation web site.

Mountain Biking

OK, OK, maybe we're shy of mountains in Michigan. But there are plenty of hilly trails through the woods, and there is an active group of mountain bikers in the area that goes out twice a week: Friday evenings and Sunday mornings. The rides are usually followed by brunch or dinner, if we feel like it. (We usually do.)

Biking schedule: click here.

Locations of the local rides: click here.

Note: the biking schedule is NEVER final. Check the schedule a few days before each ride "just in case."

Ski Races

You Can Be A Racer! Ann Arbor participates in the main alpine ski racing program for Michigan adults. It's organized by 11 ski clubs. Everything you want to know about the program, including the latest schedule, is on the racing web site: www.maccracing.org.

In this program you run on true FIS-style slalom and giant-slalom courses (just like the olympics and world cup), on the best terrain in our region. There are 12 races scheduled for five weekends up north. Four of the weekends are at Boyne Mountain and one is at Searchmont in Canada.

You don't have to make every weekend. If you can make two weekends, it's worth doing. If you can make three or more, it's a no-brainer--if you are an alpine skier, sign up. (And remember, fat old skiers with good technique always beat young athletic skiers with bad technique. In this sport, you can be "out of shape" and still have fun and do well.)

If you're 18 and raced in high school, get ready for Elite-1 or Elite-2. If you're 58 and have never run gates, welcome to class D! Also 16 & 17 years old could race at MACC if parents are registered MACC racers. We have 12 race days covering five weekends "up north" from January through March.

To learn more about racing with the Ann Ann Arbor Ski Club Race Team and the Michigan Alpine Competition Counsel, please mark you calendar, October 18, 2009, 2pm - 6pm, and attend a pre-party at Holly's place. We will discuss early season training camp, Searchmont lodging, other league schedules, and new/swap equipment. The party is open to all who are interested in learning more about ski racing and how it improves ski technique and enjoyment of recreational skiing. Please invite friends, colleagues, etc. Food, beverage, & wine will be provided.

RSVP to Holly Polopolos (734) 995-3577 hpolo2s@comcast.net or Yasumasa Miyawaki (Yaz) at yazmiya@icsdata.com

We also welcome recreational skiers to join us for a ski trip to Searchmont Resort, Ontario Canada February 2010.
